You are integrated by law after you passed the integration exam. This examination comprises two parts: the central examination (which has three components) and the practical examination (which has one component).
The central examination examines your knowledge of Dutch rules and customs. You will also have to demonstrate that you understand the Dutch language effectively. The three components of the central examination are as follows:
• Knowledge of Dutch society
• Spoken Dutch test
• Digital practical examination
You can take the practical examination in one of three ways:
• by collecting documents that prove you speak and understand the language
• by imitating real-life situations
• by collecting documents and imitating real-life situations
Imitating a situation from real life is called an assessment. If you wish to take this type of practical examination, you will have to do four assessments.
You must collect 20 documents that prove that you speak and understand the Dutch language.
A collection of documents like this is called a portfolio. You can choose from four kinds of portfolio:
• Work
• Education, Health and Parenting
• Social Participation
• Entrepreneurship
Once you have collected all 20 documents, you can send the portfolio to the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) or to an official examination institute, where your portfolio will be checked to ensure it is complete and meets the relevant criteria. You will then be interviewed about the documents in your portfolio and you will have to do a written assignment. Fiolet Taaltrainingen can advise you on the documents you need to collect and on how best to do that.

You can also decide to go for a combination. You may want to do this if, for example, you can’t collect enough documents for a complete portfolio. In that case, you could, for example, submit 10 documents and imitate two real-life situations.
The central examination is organized by the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO), and is held at six locations in the Netherlands, including Amsterdam. Fiolet Taaltrainingen can advise you when you are ready to take the examination. We can also register you for the examination. You can take your practical examination at Fiolet Taaltrainingen.
